The Circus
An exploration of the circus’ progression, and how over time it has adapted to society’s shifting opinions. The first topic depicts the dangerous roles women assistants played in circuses during the 1940s, including impalement acts. Then, “mistakes of nature” are portrayed; these became popular acts used to promote the circus through the people's 'freakish' features. The next topic covers the 'post-human freak' era through animal-centered acts. These dual art pieces depict the physical and mental abuse circus animals are often subjected to. My fourth topic illustrates the effects of alcoholism and drug abuse leading to circus deterioration. Finally, a social commentary piece shows how people take on circus-like roles as a result of modern life demands.
